Let's face it. Hot tubs, spas, swim spas and plunges are expensive and they're essentially a luxury item unless you need them for a medical condition. Even then, you won't be able to file a claim for a hot tub with your insurance company. For many, buying a new hot tub or spa may well be out of the question, even if you need it to help with injury rehabilitation or arthritis. So, what do the professionals think about purchasing a used hot tub?

The pros recommend that if you are seriously considering buying a used hot tub that you have someone who is experienced in hot tub repairs to take a look at it. They may charge you a few dollars for your time, but that could save you hundreds of dollars in repairs before you can even use the hot tub or spa. If you have to replace the heater or the jets, those repairs alone could cost well over $500. And if the fiberglass is cracked, the hot tub may not be worth purchasing at all.

Keep in mind that if you do buy a used hot tub or spa that you will still need to purchase the chemicals and testing supplies, filters and hot tub or spa covers to protect your unit. Many times, the person will give you the chemicals and accessories they have left over which means you'll want to take a close look at the cover (if included) to see if it needs replacing.

You may save a lot of money by purchasing a used hot tub or spa. Like any other used big ticket item, you'll want to make sure you're not buying someone else's problem.
